A united effort to build Canada’s Deep Geothermal Roadmap

Drilling Sunset v3 PS1800

Geothermal energy from deep underground ⇢ firm, clean heat and power

About the Coalition

The Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition was established in 2025 to bring together organizations committed to advancing deep geothermal energy in Canada. Coalition members span industry, Indigenous organizations, communities, academia, government, technology developers, and other stakeholders united by a shared vision: making Canada a global leader in geothermal energy.

The Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap is the Coalition's first step toward achieving that vision.

Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap

Canada's first national roadmap for deep geothermal energy is underway.

The Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition is working to develop an evidence-based roadmap that positions Canada as a global leader in deep geothermal energy.

In June 2026, Natural Resources Canada announced funding support for the Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap through the Energy Innovation Program, helping advance a national effort to unlock Canada's geothermal potential.

Why deep geothermal?

Forever SQ512

Clean, firm baseload

Always-on, 24/7 power and heat with minimal land use and small surface footprint.

Leaf Outline v3 SQ512

Built on Canadian strengths

Leverages Canada's world-class drilling, engineering, and project delivery expertise.

Globe SQ600

Anywhere potential

Going deep has the potential to unlock geothermal heat and power anywhere it's needed.

News

Natural Resources Canada Announces Funding for Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap

On June 11, 2026, Natural Resources Canada announced federal support for the Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap through the Energy Innovation Program.

The Roadmap will help identify the technologies, policies, investment strategies, and partnerships needed to scale geothermal energy in Canada while leveraging the country's world-leading expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering, and energy development.

About the Roadmap

Building Canada's Geothermal Future

The Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap will provide an evidence-based pathway to position Canada as a global geothermal leader.

The Roadmap has three objectives:

Tell Canada's Geothermal Story:

Build awareness of geothermal's role in economic growth, energy security, and clean power generation.

Generate New Evidence

Commission studies examining:

- Canada's energy system opportunities

- Geothermal supply chain and economic impacts

- Global market opportunities for Canadian expertise and technology

Build Consensus for Action

Engage stakeholders across regions, sectors, and Indigenous communities to identify priorities and recommendations for the future of geothermal in Canada.

Roadmap Working Groups

The Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap will be informed by four expert Working Groups that bring together leaders from industry, Indigenous communities, government, academia, and the broader geothermal sector. These Working Groups will help guide analysis, review findings, and shape recommendations throughout the Roadmap process.

Technology

Examining geothermal technologies, innovation priorities, technical barriers, and pathways to commercial deployment in Canada.

Community

Advancing Indigenous leadership, community engagement, benefit-sharing, public confidence, and approaches that ensure geothermal development reflects local priorities and values.

Finance and Economics

Exploring project economics, investment models, market development, financing mechanisms, and pathways to bankability.

Competitiveness

Assessing Canada's comparative advantages, global market opportunities, workforce strengths, supply chains, and strategies to position Canada as a leader in geothermal energy and technology.
