Natural Resources Canada Announces Funding for Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap

On June 11, 2026, at the World Geothermal Congress in Calgary, the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced $468,000 in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Energy Innovation Program for the Canadian Deep Geothermal Roadmap.

The project, led by the Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition with the Cascade Institute as Secretariat, will produce Canada’s first national roadmap for deep geothermal energy. The Coalition will work with industry, researchers, Indigenous partners, and governments to identify technology opportunities and research and development priorities for next-generation geothermal in Canada.

The Roadmap will help identify the technologies, policies, investment strategies, and partnerships needed to scale geothermal energy in Canada while leveraging the country’s world-leading expertise in drilling, subsurface engineering, and energy development.

Thomas Homer-Dixon, Executive Director of the Cascade Institute, said Canada already has a strong foundation for next-generation geothermal, but has lacked “a clear, shared path forward.” The Roadmap is designed to provide that path, grounded in evidence and focused on practical opportunities.
